A tithi is a lunar day — the time the Moon takes to gain 12° on the Sun. Thirty tithis make a lunar month, fifteen in each paksha (fortnight). Tap any one for its deity, meaning, mythology and observances, in English and Kannada.
Not tradition guessing at the sky — a single angle, measured.
Measure how far the Moon has pulled ahead of the Sun, seen from Earth. Every 12° of that gap is one tithi — thirty of them to a lunar month.
The same angle decides how much of the Moon you can see. That is why the tithi and the shape in the sky always agree — they are two readings of one number.
The nakshatra is not the phase. It is which of twenty-seven fixed star-segments the Moon is standing in — measured against the stars, not the Sun.
