All you need is a straight stick, level ground and a sunny day. This is how the Sūrya Siddhānta finds the directions and the latitude of a place, and you can do it in your own courtyard. Choose your city, then play the day or show the method.
A stick 12 aṅgulas tall stands on level ground. Through the day the tip of its shadow traces a curve. Draw a circle round the stick and mark where the shadow tip enters it in the morning and leaves it in the afternoon: the line joining the two marks runs west to east. The noon shadow at the equinox, the palabhā, gives the latitude: arctan(palabhā ÷ 12). In Bengaluru it is 2.76 aṅgulas, which gives 12.97°. Between the tropics, twice a year, the noon Sun stands straight overhead and the stick casts no shadow: in Bengaluru on 24 April and 18 August. This page draws it all with JavaScript.
